This paper uses a Translog form to estimate the water distribution cost for an irrigation consortium. The consortium operates under conditions of the under-utilization of facilities; thus, to achieve full cost recovery, water charges must be set at a higher level than efficiency. As a consequence, farmers may decide to reduce their use of the public irrigation service and instead exploit groundwater. The estimated Translog function explains the costs of water services throughout the irrigated area, and identifies items for which pricing does not accentuate the competition between the use of surface water and groundwater. Based on the estimated coefficients, a hypothesis is hence presented for pricing water provided by the consortium. |

Firm panel data sets over the period 1993 to 2002 are used to estimate translog production functions with labour, capital and material inputs for 9 Spanish food industries. To tackle the endogeneity of the regressors, the generalized method of moments estimations is employed. The specification tests reject the instrument variables only for 1 out of 9 estimates. The remaining 8 industries show evidence of homogeneity and constant returns to scale. Only one industry exhibits complete separability of all pairs of factors and thus translog is preferred to Cobb-Douglas specification for 7 industries. Substitutability and complementarity between production factors in response to price changes are studied through Morishima and Shadow elasticities.... |

This paper analyse the patterns of productivity and economic growth in the Tunisian agriculture during the 19612000. Results indicated that agriculture output growth where high in both the 19611970 and the 19711980 periods but decreased during the 19912000 period. Average output growth exceeded 6% during the 19811990 period, the average output growth during 19912000 had fallen to 4%. Over the whole period, capital was the most important contributor to output growth and labour is considered as the least significant contributor to economic growth. Total factor productivity contribution to output growth decreased from 4.64% in 19611970 to 2.86% in 19711980. In contrast, this contribution increased in 1981-1990 to close the 4.38%. In the last period,... |
